Alto Alps is located in a semi-rural
area within the Sacramento Mountains of south-central New Mexico.
Snow accumulations are such that nearby Ski Apache, located on
Sierra Blanca peak, is a popular skiing destination during the
winter snow season. Due to the high elevations and hilly terrain in
the area, driving conditions can change rapidly during snow
season...typically mid-November through mid-March.
Visitors to Alto Alps are advised
that 4-wheel drive vehicles are best for winter navigation, and tire
chains should be carried along for any 2-wheel drive vehicle during
the winter season.
(When snow storms hit, tire chains can
sell-out rapidly or be difficult/costly to find locally, so smart
travelers will bring tire chains along with them.)
